Michael Duane Johnson, born on September 13, 1967, is a retired American sprinter. He was born and raised in Dallas, Texas as the youngest of five children into a very simple family. He got schooled in Skyline High School and Baylor University. He won several NCAA titles in both indoor and outdoor sprints and relays. He broke the school record in his very first race. In 1990, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business and number one world ranking in both the 200m and 400m race.
He won his first World title in 1991 in Tokyo by winning the 200m race with a narrow margin of 0.33 of a second which is very unusual. He broke Pietro Mennea’s record of 19.72 seconds by clocking 19.66 seconds in the 200m at the U.S Olympic trials in 1996. He wore special custom-made shoes from Nike which was golden-colored and had racing spikes of Zytel and that gave him the nickname, “The man with the Golden Shoes.”
Michael captured the 400m Olympic title with an Olympic Record time of 42.49 seconds, 0.92 seconds ahead of silver medalist Roger black of Great Britain. Like every other player, he was also surrounded by various injurious which kept him away from his training and ground in 1999 but will strong will power, he came back with a bang and competed in 1999 World Championship in Seville and won his fourth 400m World Title.
