Kyries Hebert dropped from the Alouettes roster

The Montreal Alouettes announced that they had released international linebacker Kyries Hebert at his request. The veteran player, who had accumulated 391 defensive tackles including 21 sacks in 92 games with the Alouettes, played for them during the past six seasons.

When he learned that under the new coaching staff his defense position would change and his pay might be cut, he asked for the release.

“We would like to thank Kyries for everything he has done for this organization on and off the field. He has impacted the lives of many since he arrived in Montreal and we wish him the best in his future projects”, Kavis Reed,  Alouettes general manager said in a statement.

On the mind of fans, this was in the works since November last year when Hebert was named CFL’s East Division nominee as outstanding defensive player. His team went 3-15 and allowed 580 points.

The Alouettes have a tradition of trading or releasing players after they have noticeable seasons. In the case of Hebert, they released him before rosters were established and contracts offered to free agents.

The time of unemployment for Kyries was rather short - 4 hours - as he signed with the Ottawa Redblacks for one year.

In an interview with the Montreal Gazette before his Ottawa signing was announced, Hebert said, “I look forward to playing here for sure against some of my teammates that I couldn’t touch at practice."

"When I spoke to the new coordinator … I told him when we play this season, I guarantee I’m going to outplay the linebacker that you have. Bet on that," the 11-year CFL veteran said.

Besides being the East Division nominee for the outstanding defensive player award last season, Hebert was also Montreal's player of the year and led the division with 110 tackles.

At age 37, he is old for a football player, especially a linebacker. But he continues to defy age and is up for a great season with the Redblacks.
