Why was Ezekiel Elliott suspended?

Last month, the NFL announced a six-game suspension for Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliot, starting in the 2017 season. Four days after that, Elliot filed an appeal.   The appeal was heard by Harold Henderson instead of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Shortly after his suspension was announced, Elliot´s representatives wrote a statement saying that “The NFL's findings are replete with factual inaccuracies and erroneous conclusions and it 'cherry picks' so called evidence to support its conclusion while ignoring other critical evidence.”

That same Friday, August 11, the NFLPA made its own statement after the announcement.  “We are reviewing the decision and have been in touch with Ezekiel and his representatives to consider all options.”

Elliot has been accused of domestic violence, allegations that he has denied completely. There were no charges pressed or filed by the authorities and he was not even arrested.  However, the NFL has opened their own investigation.

Any domestic violence investigations are reason enough for the NFL to run their own investigation as standard procedure. Even if a player has not faced legal charges, he can still be suspended from sports activity during the time of the investigation.

The Columbus Ohio Police Department has a July, 2016 report where a woman who identified herself as Elliot´s former girlfriend claimed that she suffered physical abuse from Elliot including an assault that allegedly happened while she was sitting in the driver´s seat of her car.

The woman then filed a report alleging that the physical assaults took place continuously for a week. She shared some pictures on Instagram showing she had bruises on her leg, arms, hand, and neck.

In the same report, it is written that Elliot denied he had ever lived with the woman. He told the authorities that she got her bruises in a bar fight.

This same woman called the police on February, 2016 alleging that Elliot had pushed her against a wall. No charges were filed in any of these cases.
